*blinks* after dumping such a creepy story on them she just switches to business as usual? those kids are bound to be near traumatised, penny, you´ve got to calm them down.

Hmm...

You know something, Peya Luna? You are right. One of the reasons we have a message board is that the message board allows our readers to talk to us; and sometimes we learn from our readers. We have to admit that Peter and I are male creators, and as male creators our focus was on telling the back story and then returning to the main plot.

All the same, what you say is true. The children are young and their feelings are easy to damage, and Penny is a professional instructor. We could and should have spent more time on the reactions of the students, and we could and should have spent more space showing how Penny deals with the feelings of the children. Your point is well taken.

As well as her own feelings, and that of her sister. Watching your parents being flogged is pretty traumatizing. Even if she lies through her teeth, the readers can gein an understanding of her thoughts.

I'm writing my own story, but one thing I've learned is that the characters aren't cardboard cutouts. They have thoughts and feelings as well. I created some character profiles of the main characters to keep things consistent. Do you use any kind of outline or profiles like that?

Yes, Iceburgh, we are careful to design our characters well before we write the story; and we plot everything well before we start drawing. At the same time, we recognize that people explain themselves by actions as well as by words; and the lives of Penelope and Gideon are their ways of reacting to their own experiences just as much as anything they say. Of course, this is true for all of us as well.

to be honest, i thought penny did it intentionally, for one thing she has to be VERY careful what she says less she appears to be critizizing the germans and gets in trouble for it, on the other hand the shock serves well to drive the (carefully hidden) lesson home. those kids won´t forget her story anytime soon....and take propaganda stories like the ones about the heroic deeds of the 'toughest officer of the corps' and the 'biggest scientist in afrika' with a grain of salt

Peya Luna, your comments are intelligent and insightful, as always. We are also glad to hear from IceBurgh and our other fans. The very fact that we are having this discussion shows that that this sequence is too short and we could easily add a few panels and dialogue bubbles to make the reactions of the different characters more clear. Perhaps eventually we will. Thanks for your comments.
